The DATA course is more than a dry overview of numbers and empty warnings. The course aims to reach teens on a personal and emotional level, so they understand the effect of their choices on not just themselves, but on everyone around them.

Florida Learner’s Permit Process
Teen drivers seeking their learner’s permit in Florida must follow the following steps:
- Be at least 15 years of age
- Complete the DATA course online or in person–we make it easy to complete the course from the comfort of your home
- Have a parent or legal guardian complete the Parental Consent for a Driver Application of a Minor form
- Provide proof of social security number, identity, DATA course completion and address
- Pass the following: vision exam, hearing test and written knowledge test of road rules
Once a learner’s permit is acquired, graduated driving laws will apply in varying stages until the driver turns 18.
Please note: If the written knowledge test is taken through a third-party administrator, there is the potential that the applicant will be asked to take the test again at the Florida DMV office upon arrival. This is due to the fact that the state randomly selects individuals who have taken the test elsewhere to repeat the test at the DMV.
Individuals who are first-time drivers as adults–over the age of 18–will not need to apply for a learner’s permit. These new drivers will follow a different process and are not subject to the graduated driving laws applied to first-time teen drivers wishing to operate motor vehicles.
How Parents Can Get Involved
As a parent with a teen going through the driver education process in Florida, you may be wondering the best ways to get involved to make the experience more beneficial for your child. When it comes to the dangers of drinking and driving, there is no better time to have a conversation with your teen than when they are preparing to take their drug and alcohol test online.
The DATA course and Florida DMV drug and alcohol test are designed to leave a lasting impact on your teen, so they will take their driving behavior and the laws surrounding alcohol and drug use seriously. Parental reinforcement can go a long way in cementing these lessons.
