What is the DATA Course?

American Safety Council® offers the Drug and Alcohol Course, also known as the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education Course (DATA and TLSAE, respectively) to first time drivers in the state of Florida. The state-approved course, which covers traffic law and substance abuse education, is a requirement for all first-time drivers seeking to obtain their Florida learner’s permit.

Who is the DATA Course for?

The DATA course is designed for first-time teen drivers in the state of Florida. If you are seeking to obtain your learner’s permit in Florida, then this course is a necessary step on the road to receiving driving privileges and independence. Designed to help teens understand the negative impact of drugs and alcohol on driving abilities, the course aims to create safer drivers from the beginning.

Why Take the DATA Course?

The first and most important reason to take the DATA course is that it is required by the state for all first-time teen drivers who are seeking to obtain their learner’s permit. However, the reasons for taking the DATA course go much deeper.

With driving comes countless opportunities to interact with the world in ways that were not possible before having driving privileges. Some of the interactions young drivers could experience involve the possibility of alcohol and drugs. While partaking of drugs or alcohol could be tempting, it is important for teen drivers to understand how their choices to engage with alcohol and drugs could impact not just their own life, but the lives of everyone else they encounter, when they get behind the wheel.

By taking the DATA course, teens will gain a greater understanding of how their choices matter as well as the ripple effect that takes place every time they set out on the road. Individuals should take the DATA course not just for their own wellbeing, but for the safety and wellbeing of others. After all, drinking-related crashes are a leading cause of accidents and deaths involving teens behind the wheel. There is a clear need for the education the DATA course seeks to provide.

Florida Learner’s Permit Process

Teen drivers seeking their learner’s permit in Florida must follow the following steps:

  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Complete the DATA course online or in person–we make it easy to complete the course from the comfort of your home
  • Have a parent or legal guardian complete the Parental Consent for a Driver Application of a Minor form
  • Provide proof of social security number, identity, DATA course completion and address
  • Pass the following: vision exam, hearing test and written knowledge test of road rules

Once a learner’s permit is acquired, graduated driving laws will apply in varying stages until the driver turns 18.

Please note: If the written knowledge test is taken through a third-party administrator, there is the potential that the applicant will be asked to take the test again at the Florida DMV office upon arrival. This is due to the fact that the state randomly selects individuals who have taken the test elsewhere to repeat the test at the DMV.

Individuals who are first-time drivers as adults–over the age of 18–will not need to apply for a learner’s permit. These new drivers will follow a different process and are not subject to the graduated driving laws applied to first-time teen drivers wishing to operate motor vehicles.

How Parents Can Get Involved

As a parent with a teen going through the driver education process in Florida, you may be wondering the best ways to get involved to make the experience more beneficial for your child. When it comes to the dangers of drinking and driving, there is no better time to have a conversation with your teen than when they are preparing to take their drug and alcohol test online.

The DATA course and Florida DMV drug and alcohol test are designed to leave a lasting impact on your teen, so they will take their driving behavior and the laws surrounding alcohol and drug use seriously. Parental reinforcement can go a long way in cementing these lessons.

Ways to help your teen establish safe driving habits:

  • Clearly define your expectations about drinking and driving and consider signing a physical contract that lays out these expectations.
  • Establish a code with your teen that they can text you if they need a ride home from a party.
  • Keep liquor cabinets in your home secured and ensure older siblings understand the rules in place for your new teen driver.
  • Assist your teen in selecting a DATA course administrator that you can trust, like American Safety Council.
  • Make yourself available to answer questions from your experience as your teen completes their DATA course and the Florida drug and alcohol test.
  • Set a good example. Your teen will model your behavior surrounding drugs and alcohol.
